Ever Felt Like A Plastic Bag, Just Drifting Through the Wind? January 1, 2011

We’ve all felt completely useless to the world at some stage or another  and most often than not, someone has comforted us, telling us that we are unique contribution to this world and that we do matter.

Well, that’s just the message Katy Perry’s (Or should I say Mrs. Brand?) new single, Firework, is spreading. And I think it’s a beautiful message.

I think the metaphor’s that Miss Katy uses are very powerful, they really show the emoticons people experience when they go through these feelings of unworthiness. Such examples are: “Do you ever feel so paper-thin, like a house of cards, one blow from caving in?” and “Do you ever feel like a plastic bag drifting through the wind, wanting to start again?”

The song is very upbeat and easy listening, you just can’t help but tap your feet and sing-a-long, which is one of the reasons Katy Perry has chosen this as her favourite song from her new album, Teenage Dream. She says:

“People are coming back and almost adopting it as their own anthem, and it’s hard, I think, to write an anthem that’s not cheesy, and I hope that this could be something in that category. I hope this could be one of those things where it’s like, ‘Yeah, I want to put my fist up and feel proud and feel strong. But I also don’t want to be cheesy, it’s a fine line, and I think ‘Firework’ … would be like the opus or my one song — if I had to pick a song to play — ’cause it has a great beat. But it also has a fantastic message.”

This ‘anthem’ managed to reach number one in the US Billboard Hot 100. It also received a platinum certificate in Australia, a Gold in New Zealand and Silver in the UK when it reached number 3 in the UK Singles Chart.

I doubt anybody could do a spin on this song that could top the original, so if anybody is thinking about it, DON’T. Unless of course you’re looking to be humiliated.

My favourite lyric from the song is the following:

You don’t have to feel like a waste of space
You’re original, cannot be replaced
If you only knew what the future holds
After a hurricane comes a rainbow

And with that, have a great day everybody! And remember, “You’re a Firework!”
